More than ever, healthcare institutions are faced with the urgent need to reposition and strategically deploy their resources in order to remain viable and profitable in the healthcare market. With the proliferation of information by way of the internet, there is an increased awareness among customers on the quality of services available to them. This, together with the emergence of fierce competitions, has placed a renewed burden on organizations, particularly healthcare institutions to review their existing strategies and adopt new approaches in order to deliver quality services and produce excellent clinical outcomes.
In 2008, ten years after we had taken over the management of Lily Hospitals Limited, we did adopt a strategy to drive improvement in our internal processes and reposition ourselves to become one of Nigeria’s foremost healthcare institutions known for quality clinical outcomes that can be benchmarked against best practice anywhere in the world. We began the process of getting quality management systems in place that will not only create a quality conscious work environment but that will also give us an edge in the ever-competitive health market space. In 2009, we became the first private healthcare institution in Nigeria to be certified with the NIS ISO 9001:2000 certification. This was later revalidated to the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System in 2011. The journey towards building a quality healthcare institution has lead us as well in achieving the Council of Health Service Accreditation for Southern Africa (COHSASA) accreditation, which is the only internationally accredited quality improvement and accreditation body for healthcare facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. We have also migrated to the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System.
The pursuit of building a quality-driven work culture through quality management systems has indeed borne fruits for us as an organization as we have grown in both scope and size. Lily Hospitals Limited was just recently awarded the private healthcare provider for the year 2019 by the Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Awards. All of this would not have been possible without consciously adopting and investing in quality.
